Zuckerberg’s Veto on Instagram Wellbeing Initiatives Exposed in Lawsuit

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been accused of consistently impeding initiatives designed to enhance the welfare of teenagers using Facebook and Instagram. This information emerged from internal communications revealed in a lawsuit filed by Massachusetts.

A key issue involved Zuckerberg vetoing in 2019 proposal to disable Instagram’s “beauty filters” which are said to harm teens’ mental health by promoting unrealistic body images. Despite broad support for this proposal from senior figures within Meta, Zuckerberg, claiming a lack of data on the filters’ harmfulness and their demand, decided to keep them.
