Neighbors’ Consejo, the Public Charitable Organization that Join Hands to Celebrate Mental Health Month
BY: Neighbors’ Consejo|
May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health and wellbeing, as well as a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote resources for those struggling with mental health issues. Being conscious of this month is crucial in addressing the ongoing mental health crisis and in ensuring that individuals receive the support they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
That is why we want to talk about Neighbors’ Consejo [1] , a non-profit and public charitable organization that since 1995 has provided free, culturally, and linguistically competent mental health and community support services to our Latino, African- American and other neighbors who are among the most vulnerable residents in Washington, D.C. [2] .
With the opening of Neighbors’ Consejo in 1995, some neighbors who arrived from their native countries suffering trauma and other conditions started to receive support [3] . Nowadays, we have three main services for the community completely free for the neediest in our city: Psychiatric services, community support services and psychotherapy in person and online [4] .
Perhaps you are still wondering how we can support our uninsured neighbors with free services. Well, Neighbors’ Consejo acknowledges the individuals and organizations that generously support our mission to help our neighbors in Washington, D.C [5] . For example, The Greater Washington Community Foundation [6] , Hispanics in Philanthropy, [7] Philip L. Graham Fund [8] , the DC Government [9] and The Health Resources & Services Administration [10] . Of course, if you want to join this helpful community, please visit https://neighborsc.org/donate/
We invite you to prioritize your mental health. It is easy to get caught up in the stress of daily life, but it is important to remember that mental health is just an important as physical health. Whether it is through practicing self-care, seeking therapy or support, or simply taking a break to recharge, there are many ways to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing.
