How Do I Tend to My Emotional Wellbeing?

BY: Neighbors’ Consejo|

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the importance of caring for our emotional wellbeing. Mental health is just as crucial as physical health and neglecting it can have a significant impact on our overall quality of life. In this article we want to show you how you can take care of your mental health and remember that together we can break the stigma around it.

The National Institute of Mental Health [1]  recommends to us: Get regular exercise; eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated; make sleep a priority; try a relaxing activity; set goals and priorities; practice gratitude; focus on positivity and stay connected. The World Health Organization (WHO [2] ) considers that there are six ways to take care of our emotional wellbeing: “talk to someone you trust; look after your physical health; do activities that you enjoy; steer away from harmful substances; take two minutes to focus on the world around you.

On the other hand, most of us spend a lot of time on our smartphone, that is why we want to recommend that you download some free apps that could help you, such as: BetterHelp; Talkspace; Headspace; Sanvello; Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame; I am Sober; MoodKit; Calm; Happify; Worry Watch [3] . According to this, Mental Health America (MHA [4] ) considers it advisable to have , “a mood tracking app can let you input your emotions, thoughts, and other events that happen in your life to help identify patterns in your mood and overall wellbeing.”

Additionally, Emily Whiton [5]  recommends seven mental health and wellbeing Instagram accounts to follow: @makedaisychains; @dearmyanxiety; @themindgeek; @laurajaneillustrations; @yung_pueblo; @thelastestkate and @counsellingdirectory. Of course, we also take advantage of inviting you to follow us on our social networks at @Neighborscorg.

Brain & Behavior Research Foundation [6]  considers that “mentally healthy” people often:

  • Enjoy life and can laugh and have fun.
  • Can deal with stress and bounce back from adversity.
  • Feel a sense of meaning and purpose, in both their activities and their relationships.
  • Are flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Can build and maintain fulfilling relationships.

In conclusion, this month is a big opportunity for us to focus on our emotional wellbeing and break the stigma surrounding mental health. Neglecting our mental health can have a significant impact on our lives, but by prioritizing it, we can lead happier and healthier lives.
