New Mental Health Referral Initiative Launched by Air Force and Space Force Under the Brandon Act

In a significant move to address mental health concerns within the armed forces, the Air Force and Space Force have introduced a pioneering mental health referral program under the provisions of the Brandon Act. The initiative aims to enhance support for service members grappling with mental health challenges by providing a structured pathway for seeking assistance.

The Brandon Act, named after deceased Air Force Senior Airman Brandon Caserta, who took his own life after experiencing mental health struggles, requires the establishment of a confidential process for military personnel to access mental health resources.

Unlike other mental health referrals, the new policy under the Brandon Act is initiated by the service member versus having a mandatory referral initiated by superiors, giving the rank and file some control over their situation.
