Neighbors’ Consejo is a non-profit and public charitable organization that since 1995 has been dedicated to providing free, culturally and linguistically competent mental health and community support services to individuals who are among the neediest and most vulnerable in Washington, DC.
History
1994
Neighbors’ Consejo was founded in a church basement in Washington, D.C. by a group residents concerned about the rising homelessness and addiction, particularly alcoholism, in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.
1995
Neighbors’ was officially incorporated, led by the original founding group as the first board of directors.
1990s
Focused on serving the Latino community, composed mainly of Central American migrants fleeing civil wars, many of whom faced untreated traumas or mental health disorders.
1995-onwards
Prioritized the delivery of mental health and community support services in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner, ensuring access to those unaware of available support.
2007
Acquired three houses on 16th Street, NW, serving as community shelters.
2008
Provided temporary refuge for families displaced by a fire in Mt. Pleasant.
2016
Reorganized to better serve our neediest African American and Latino neighbors; opened service centers in northwest and southeast D.C.
Present Day
Operates locations on Georgia Avenue, NW and Anacostia in SE, offering high-quality mental health and community support services to neighbors in need across the city.
