Traits, Styles, and Impact: The Essence of Leadership

What makes a leader truly great? Is it their charisma, their vision, or perhaps their ability to inspire and drive change? Leadership, in its most distilled form, is a tapestry woven from distinct traits, diverse styles, and far-reaching impacts. As we journey though the intricate layers of what defines effective leadership, we will explore how various leadership styles shape the trajectory of businesses, communities, and even nations. This comprehensive overview seeks to capture the essence of leadership, offering insights into how exceptional leaders harness their unique qualities to create lasting legacies.

According to Harvard Business School, a leader has 6 characteristics: “ability to influence others; transparency -to an extent; encourage risk-taking and innovation; integrity and accountability; act decisively; demonstrate resilience.”

“To inspire and motivate others, good leaders focus on doing six key things. They provide directions even in conditions of fast change and ambiguity; they focus on employee engagement and wellbeing; they actively support employees; they emphasize Voice; they inspire trust; and they are active learners.” Additionally, MC Learning affirms, “as motivation is so important encouraging others is a key leadership skill. Leaders who praise achievements, small and large, and who recognize excellence will inspire people to excel. It shows that as a leader, you care about people as well as results. Encouraging starts with showing that you believe others have the capacity to excel, and then celebrating the progress that is being made.”

Key differences between good leader vs. bad leaders:

  1. Vision vs. Short-term thinking
  2. Empathy vs. self-centeredness
  3. Communication vs. secrecy
  4. Accountability vs. blame
  5. Adaptability vs. rigidity
  6. Empowerment vs. micromanagement
  7. Collaboration vs. authoritarianism

The University of Florida affirms, “the ability to influence is an essential leadership skill. To influence is to have an impact on the behaviors, attitudes, opinions and choices of others. Influence is not to be confused with power or control. It’s not about manipulating others to get your way. It’s about noticing what motivates others’ commitment and using that knowledge to leverage performance and positive results. A leader’s ability to have influence with others is based on trust; in fact, our influence expands in proportion to the amount of trust that exists in a relationship.”

What about the relation between leadership and mental health? According to research at Rutgers University , “today’s leaders are suffering from poor wellbeing and mental health issues more so than ever before. Too often, they put the needs of the business or their team before their own needs. Much like airline pre-flight instructions to “put your oxygen mask on first, before helping others,” leaders need to take a similar approach by managing their own wellbeing first. By doing so, you can become role models for your employees and build stronger team relationships that lead to better health and productivity outcomes. The following toolkit gives you the inspiration, advice, and real-world examples to guide you on your journey to better wellbeing.”

Additionally, “the most important takeaway is prioritizing your own wellbeing first, because as a leader, it’s your job to demonstrate what success looks like to your team member. This includes all facets of wellbeing and as a leader, you must recognize that your mental wellness is directly linked to the wellbeing of your team members. Does this mean that you have to be a perfect example of success? Absolutely not. But it’s critical that you take steps in the right direction, and ideally, be transparent about your journey with your employees, so they’re inspired to act as well.”

What are the challenges of leadership?

  • Providing inspiration
  • Developing others
  • Leading change
  • Handling different perspectives
  • Dealing with imposter syndrome
  • Managing a team

In conclusion, effective leadership is characterized by a unique combination of traits, styles, and impacts that distinguish great leaders from merely competent ones. Exceptional leaders possess the ability to influence others, demonstrate resilience, act decisively, and maintain integrity and accountability. They inspire trust, encourage risk-taking and innovation, and focus on employee engagement and wellbeing. Good leaders excel by harnessing their unique qualities to create lasting legacies, shaping the trajectory of businesses, communities, and even nations through their visionary and empathetic approaches.
