Georgia’s “Operation New Hope” Expands
Georgia has launched 30 new transition units at West Central Georgia Regional Hospital to help mental health patients move from state hospitals back into society. This “Operation New Hope” initiative teaches residents essential daily tasks- like cooking and budgeting- to ensure they are ready for independent living.
With a $1.6 million initial investment and plans for a $409 million new facility, the state aims to clear up a massive backlog of 800 people waiting for court-ordered care. This expansion is a key step in fixing Georgia’s behavioral health system and reducing the burden on local jails.
“The first group of 10 patients began treatment last week. Program operators are working to fill the remaining 20 beds.”
