Fighting the Mental Health Crisis in Law Enforcement
Law enforcement and correctional officers risk their lives for public safety but suffer in silence from mounting mental health issues. The “defund the police” movement and negative portrayals have left officers feelings vilified and isolated. Officers’ suicides are alarming high, with Correctional Officer (COs) facing even greater risk.
Initiatives like New Jersey’s NJRP-LE (New Jersey Resilience Program for Law Enforcement) and Utah’s expanded first responder services show a way forward. Breaking the stigma and supporting mental health is key to saving lives and protecting communities.
“Nearly 30% of COs suffer from PTSD, yet stigma and limited resources prevent many from seeking help.”
