Bridging Access and Quality in Mental Health Care

The Biden-Harris administration has made historic investments in behavioral health care, expanding access through policies like The Safer Communities Act. However, despite increased access, the prevalence of mental health issues remains unchanged due to the “quality gap”—including challenges like  inconsistent adherence to evidence-based practices and inadequate outcome tracking.

Emerging technologies, such as AI and smartphone-based tools, offer scalable solutions to enhance treatment quality. Ensuring the success of these advancements requires practitioners’ openness to monitoring and patients’ willingness to share data, paving the way for impactful, high-quality care.

“When we primarily focus on the goal of increasing access, then the number of people receiving services becomes our measure of success, irrespective of the outcomes achieved.”
